"Land of the Sky" Nickname

Asheville and the surrounding Western North Carolina region are often called "The Land of the Sky," a nickname that originated from an 1875 novel by Salisbury, North Carolina-born writer Frances Fisher Tiernan, who wrote under the pen name Christian Reid. Her book, titled "The Land of the Sky; or, Adventures in Mountain By-Ways," helped popularize the phrase for the region.
