CONOVER ODDITY • #1 OF 10

Original Name: The Railroad Wye of "Canova"

Conover was established in the 1870s at a strategic railroad "wye" (Y-switch) connecting the Western North Carolina Railroad to Newton and Hickory. Originally named "Canova," widespread postal misspellings and local rail pronunciation led founders to officially charter it as Conover in 1877.

What Conover is Known For & Why People Come Here

Conover is known as a significant hub within the "Unifour" region (Hickory–Lenoir–Morganton Metropolitan Statistical Area), historically recognized for its robust manufacturing legacy, particularly in furniture and textiles, much like its neighbors. Today, it maintains this industrious spirit but has diversified its economy, becoming a strategic logistics and distribution center due to its prime location along Interstate 40 and U.S. Highway 70. People are drawn to Conover for several reasons: its strategic transportation access, its relatively affordable housing market, its community-focused environment, and its strong public school system (Newton-Conover City Schools). It attracts families and individuals seeking a balance between career opportunities and a comfortable, close-knit community setting that is still within easy reach of larger cities like Charlotte and Asheville. Its identity as a productive, growing town with a strong work ethic continues to define its appeal.
