The Monument to an Agricultural Pest in Enterprise
In 1919, the town of Enterprise erected the world’s only monument to an agricultural pest—the boll weevil. After the beetle decimated local cotton crops, farmers diversified into peanuts and became prosperous, raising a statue in deep gratitude to the insect for forcing agricultural modernization.
