Local Heritage & Roots
Campbellsville's history began with its founding in 1817 by Andrew Campbell, who, along with his wife Rebecca and four brothers, migrated from Augusta County, Virginia. Campbell, who owned a gristmill and tavern, started selling lots in the area as early as 1814. The town was officially laid out in 1817. In 1848, Campbellsville was designated the county seat when Taylor County was formed from a part of Green County, named after General Zachary Taylor. The city agreed to sell its public square to the county for one dollar to facilitate the construction of a courthouse, establishing a town center that remains important today. Early industrial development included a flour mill, sawmill, and woolen and carding mill by 1892. The arrival of the Union Underwear Company in 1948 significantly spurred economic growth. Today, Campbellsville has evolved into a regional center for commerce, education, and healthcare.
