The Downtown "No Right Turn on Red" Rule

Uniquely among most North American cities, turning right on a red light is strictly forbidden on Montreal Island, with very few exceptions outside of the downtown core. This bylaw, intended to protect pedestrians and reduce collisions, often surprises and confuses visitors navigating the city's streets.
