The Cardiff Giant Sensation of 1869
In Cardiff, New York, well-diggers unearthed a 10-foot-tall stone human figure that captivated thousands who believed it was a petrified Biblical giant. It was later revealed as an ingenious hoax sculpted from gypsum, prompting P.T. Barnum to craft his own duplicate when denied buying the original.
