Virginia State Capitol: A Jefferson Design

The Virginia State Capitol in Richmond was designed by Thomas Jefferson, with assistance from French architect Charles-Louis Clérisseau, and was modeled after the ancient Roman temple, the Maison Carrée, in Nîmes, France. Construction on the Capitol began in 1785 and it houses the Virginia General Assembly, which is the oldest elected legislative body in North America, established as the House of Burgesses in 1619.
